Madison Rocks : Epic Systems

A few weekends ago, over 4th July weekend, we decided to string a few days together and go away for the weekend.  We left it a little last minute to decide, and so choices were limited.

We settled on Madison, as we had not been in a few years, as we knew House On The Rock was cool to visit, and the kids had not been in a few years. You can find out more about that here.

Lorraine however, resourceful as always, also found out about a place called Epic Systems, which is a difficult place to describe!

It is a health records software company base in Verona, WI, started in 1979 by a lady in her garage, by the name of Judith (Judy) Faulkner. Not sure why she decided to do what she did with the campus, but it is, in a word, EPIC. There are a few pictures below, but I also linked a couple of video tours that really capture the place.

In short, there are several buildings in the campus, each of which has a theme. Anything from Heaven to Hell, Wizardry (Think Harry Potter), Medieval (Dragons & Knights), Oz, Alice, Jules Verne, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, etc. Each staff member has their own or shared office, no cubicles.

All food and drinks are included for staff, they have bicycles to ride around the campus, and lots of open common space for people to meet or hang out in. Every bathroom, elevator, meeting room and hallway are decorated in the theme of the building/area.

You can take a self-guided tour of the facility, for free, seven days a week;  6 hours each weekend day and every weekday from 2:30 thru 5pm, whilst people are working in their offices!!

Some of my pics from Epic are below, there are about 300 more on my Facebook page if you want to check them out. Scroll back to the Devil Dog Elevator (see right) and work backwards from there.

If you ever find yourself in the Madison/Verona area, do it, you will not be disappointed, but leave plenty of time, We spent probably close to 8 hours there over a couple of days.  These guys have done a whole series of tour videos that are worth checking out.

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 Wizard, Part 4 Alice & Oz, Part 5 Jules Verne, Willy Wonka and more
